At 10:08 p.m. last night, Historic City News reporters in St Augustine were informed that the Florida Highway Patrol was on the scene of a crash where a 2010 GMC Sierra pickup truck collided with a local man on a 2006 Yamaha Moped as he headed north on SR-A1A.
The driver of the moped, 29 year-old Michael David Pius of St Augustine, was transported with serious injuries to the trauma unit at Orange Park Medical Center by air ambulance.
Trooper J.H. Bedenbaugh could not conclude if alcohol was involved in the late-night collision as the driver of the GMC truck pulled across SR-A1A onto A1A Beach Boulevard in St Augustine Beach; striking the moped as it was headed north.
Charges are pending as the investigation continues.
The driver of the truck, 18 year-old Blake Aaron Benedict, also of St Augustine, did not suffer any injuries although he sustained about $8,000 in damage to his vehicle. Investigators estimated that damage to the moped was about $3,000.
