Port to set millage rate tomorrow
Historic City News has learned that at tomorrow afternoon’s meeting, the St Augustine Port Waterway and Beach District will discuss the special taxing district’s millage rate assessment for the next fiscal year; which begins October 1, 2012.
St Johns County Tax Collector Dennis Hollingsworth will use this information to prepare TRIM notices, which will be mailed to property owners next month.
TRIM is an acronym for the Truth In Millage Law, passed in 1980 by the Florida state legislature. It was designed to keep the public informed about the taxes as proposed by local taxing authorities. The TRIM notice is the “Notice of Proposed Property Taxes” required by this law.
In addition, special projects to be included in the Fiscal Year 2012-2013 budget are scheduled as an agenda item. Not on the agenda, St Augustine Lighthouse reportedly plans to speak during the “Public Comment” period; as may others interested in funding for special projects.
If you plan to attend, the regular business meeting will convene tomorrow, Tuesday, July 17, at 3:00 p.m. in the St Augustine Beach City Commission Meeting Room located at 2200 A1A South in St Augustine Beach. For more information, call (904) 824-0113.
Port commissioners serve without compensation and are elected to four-year terms; next month, the seat for Group 4 will be elected in a three-way, non-partisan election between Chuck Hennessey, John Carl Blow, and Robert Kee. The purpose of the special taxing district is to promote and facilitate the development of St Augustine as the major center for commercial and recreational marine activity in northeast Florida.
