Veterans helping veterans
By Michael Isam
Historic City News reader Michael Isam, reported that on Saturday, members of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, Chapter 20-2, held a brief check-presentation and recognition ceremony at the Clyde E Lassen State Veterans’ Nursing Home facility in St Augustine.
Association executive officer, Doc Reaper, presented a donation to be used for the residents’ fund to Diane King, administrator of the facility. A quilt made by a Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association Auxiliary member in Tampa was also presented.
Double-sided, the wall-hanging quilt bears the insignia from several branches of military service and bears the signatures of many members. The other side bears a stylized eagle holding a banner with the words “All Gave Some, Some Gave All” in its talons.
The eagle wings bear the American flag on one side and the POW/MIA flag on the opposite. “This quilt will be displayed prominently in our facility,” said King.
“This is our way of saying thank you to veterans,” Reaper told Isam. “We want them to know that they, and their service, are remembered and appreciated.”
The residents use monies from the fund to eat out, go to a movie or get things that they need — but otherwise cannot afford.
The money was raised during one of the fund-raising “Poker Runs” held by the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association.
Immediately after the ceremony, several Association members left for Jacksonville to be part of ceremonies at the Jacksonville Sharks game.
