Historic City News has learned that the body of a 29 year-old man who went into the St Johns River to retrieve a cast net, and did not resurface, has been pulled from just below the surface of the water; about 20-30 feet north of the Shands pier.
Just after 2:45 p.m. today, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the victim’s cousin; stating that Lorenzo D. Moore, Jr., whose address is not known at this time, went into the river, but never came back up.
A team that included resources from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and Marine Rescue, officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, US Coast Guard, St Johns County Sheriff’s Office air unit and dive team searched for over two hours to find Moore; his body was located just after 5:30 p.m.
The victim’s body was transported by Marine-Rescue to a local pier, where it was released to the Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy. The exact cause of the victim’s death will not be known until the completion of the postmortem examination of the remains.
