Reception reviews 16th century garb and gear

Thursday evening, Historic City News readers interested in the interpretation of 16th century life in St Augustine are invited to attend a reception and presentation of “the garb and gear” of the Juan Ponce de León period.

Many residents will want to participate in local events next year celebrating the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Florida; proper period dress will play an essential part of that celebration.

Elaine Fraser and Michelle Reyna are sponsoring the “Mini-Clinic” where living history re-enactors will discuss and portray the material culture of the era, display period clothing and equipment, and local sutlers and seamstresses will speak about making and supplying clothing and accessories.

The presentation will feature examples of period eating wares, weaponry and personal goods as used by the soldiers, sailors and attendants accompanying Ponce de Leon on his journey of exploration; leading to the discovery and naming of Florida in 1513.

The wine-and-cheese reception will be held at the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse on St George Street in St Augustine on Thursday, June 28 at 7:00 p.m. A suggested donation of $10.00 per visitor is requested.
