Rediscover the Willie Galimore Center

Many Historic City News readers will recall that the City of St Augustine built the Willie Galimore Center as a multi-purpose facility in 1984, adjacent to Eddie Vickers Park at the south end of Riberia Street; but after the pool was closed, many residents began spending less time there.

After increasing costs threatened the operation of the entire facility, the city stepped in and took on the operation of the center. “Word has gotten out that the Willie Galimore Center has reopened,” said Public Affairs Director, Paul W. Williamson.

With the success of the Lincolnville Farmers Market on Sundays as well as the CitySprout Lincolnville Community Garden, there has been increased awareness of the improvements at the Center by individuals, private organizations, churches and school groups.

Currently, five or six recreational activities are regularly scheduled in the center; usually during the week.

The center features two function rooms. The large room will seat 143 people in a banquet style and can accommodate up to 280 people for a stand-up event, such as a reception. The smaller room will seat 30 people for dining and 80 people for a stand-up event. The center also features a kitchen, with ice machine, and restrooms sufficient to accommodate large functions.

The City of St Augustine makes the facility available for rental; the rate is $35 per hour. There is also a $100 refundable deposit. The city will provide an on-site staff person throughout any event. To check on availability and to book the Galimore Center, call 904-209-4304.
