Student artwork will hang next to Picasso

St Johns County Education Foundation has announced to Historic City News in St Augustine that Arts Alive will present a special program that may help local students become interested in sixty-eight of Picasso’s rarely seen works on display at the Visitors Information Center next year.

According to the Foundation, a select number of St Johns County student art pieces will be chosen to hang on display alongside these original Picasso pieces.

“We will be looking at composition, value and proportion, as well as how the piece relates to the theme,” explained Stacie Hernandez, the owner of Palencia Fine Arts Academy. “The best of the best will be chosen to hang with Picasso.”

From now until the December 21st submission deadline, art teachers from the district’s thirty-four schools will submit their student’s work — each piece inspired by one of Picasso’s many styles.

There will be three age categories of student art including elementary, middle and high school. Semi-finalists who submit the top twenty pieces from each age class, selected by a panel of professional judges, will have their work displayed at the Palencia Fine Arts Academy on January 12, 2013 for a juried show.

The winning student pieces, selected during the juried show, will go on to hang with Picasso at the Visitors Information Center; beginning January 19th and continuing through April. The selected art students will win monetary prizes for themselves and their art teacher’s classroom.
