Supervisor audit reports 100 percent accuracy

When Historic City News local reporters contacted St Johns County Supervisor of Elections, Vicky Oakes, for the results of her manual audit Tuesday, she was smiling from ear-to-ear as she said, “100 percent accurate”.

After each election, the law requires the local canvassing board to conduct a manual audit of the voting system used in the previous election. This was the second election for Oakes since she was appointed by Governor Rick Scott to assume the office formerly held by Penny Halyburton — however, it was her first countywide election.

The canvassing board randomly selects one precinct after the election for a manual audit; this time, it was precinct 502. Ballots cast by 1070 registered voters were hand counted and compared against published election results.

The tally includes Election Day, absentee, early voting, and provisional ballots.

The manual audit was conducted Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at the Elections Office and was open to the public to observe.

By Tuesday morning, Oakes said that the certified report of the manual audit would be filed with the Division of Elections. “I am pleased to report the overall accuracy of the audit was 100%,” Oakes attested.
