A Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Assistant Chief was arrested and taken to jail in St Johns County early Saturday morning after he crashed his 2005 Mercedes 4 door sedan into a tractor trailer on the I-95 exit ramp at SR-206 at about 12:48 a.m., according to a report received by Historic City News today.
Florida Highway Patrol Sergeant Dylan Bryan reported that 46-year-old Larry Leon Jones Jr., who is a commander in a zone that includes Northwest and West Jacksonville, was cooperative with officers at the scene; but failed a field sobriety test and showed positive signs of impairment.
“Sheriff Rutherford has initiated an Internal Affairs investigation,” Sheriff’s spokeswoman Lauri-Ellen Smith told reporters during the day Saturday. “The matter will be dealt with appropriately.”
Although Jones’ exact blood alcohol level has not yet been released, according to booking records at the St Johns County Detention Facility, Jones was booked on 4/20/2013 at 4:19 a.m. and charged with a violation of 316.193(1) F.S., driving under the influence.
He was released Saturday after posting a $500 appearance bond.
According to details included in the crash report, Jones was traveling alone and sustained no injuries in the collision.
