Lanes on SR-16 have finally cleared, according to a 10:00 a.m. update from the Traffic Division of the St Johns County Sheriff’s Office; after a major two-car collision had the highway completely closed down since about 7:00 a.m. today.
Public Information Officer Matthew Sara informed Historic City News that emergency medical personnel and firefighters arrived at the scene on SR-16 in the area of Four Mile Road to find one of the vehicles overturned with the driver trapped inside.
“The patient was extricated from the vehicle and transported to Flagler Hospital in critical condition as a trauma arrest,” Sara told reporters. “Crews were able to re-establish vitals while enroute to Flagler, and the patient was stabilized for transportation to University of Florida Health Jacksonville by air ambulance.”
“The eastbound lanes of SR-16 were completely blocked,” SJSO Corporal Catherine Payne reported. “Traffic was being diverted while the Florida Highway Patrol investigated the crash.”
