Kathy Catron, Director of Communications for the Visitors and Convention Bureau at FloridasHistoricCoast.com, announced that tomorrow, about 11:30 a.m., Historic City News readers can watch as El Galeon and her crew sail into the Matanzas Bay; America’s oldest seaport.
The 170 foot, 495 ton, authentic, wooden galleon replica will arrive in St Augustine Tuesday, May 21, at approximately 11:30 a.m.; and, while in port, will be open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for public visits at the St Augustine City Marina.
“Researchers in Seville, Spain, recently found the construction plans for the San Pelayo; the flagship of our founder Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles which was part of Spain’s West Indies fleet and was the first mammoth-sized galleon to arrive in the historic city of St Augustine,” Catron said. “We are excited to welcome El Galeon as it continues its Viva Florida 500 voyage; in commemoration of this year’s 500th anniversary of the naming of La Florida by another well-known and important Spanish explorer — Ponce de Leon.”
Tickets are $15 for adults, $8 for children; ages 6 to 12, and children age 5 and under are free.
