Flags lowered for Flossie Poe on Saturday

Flags will be lowered at City Hall in St Augustine tomorrow in honor of Flossie Irene Poe who passed away on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013 at her home on Springs Court in Macon, Georgia. She was 101-years-old.

According to her family, Poe moved to St Augustine around 1922 when her father took a position with Florida East Coast Railway.

For over sixty-years, Flossie Poe, who became a senior officer of the Exchange Bank of St Augustine in the 1950’s, and retired as senior vice president, called St Augustine home. She was an active leader in numerous civic and social organizations; including the St. Johns County Garden Club, the Altrusa Club of St. Augustine, the St. Johns County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, and United Way of St. Johns County. She was a worthy matron and life member of Eastern Star, and former president of the Federated Women’s Club of St. Augustine. She was a member of the United Methodist Women for 80 years.

On September 22, 1997, Public Affairs Director Paul Williamson reported that she became the 20th recipient of the city’s de Avilés Award.

“Lowering the flags at City Hall is customary out of respect upon the death of former mayors and commissioners and recipients of the city’s two highest honors, the de Avilés Award and the Order of La Florida,” Williamson told Historic City News. “We will extend Mrs. Poe that honor on Saturday, April 6.”

Poe was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband, Darrell Clifford Poe; and sister, Bonita M. Lynn who died in March of 1999.

Survivors include one daughter, 77-year-old Bonnie Lee Herin of Macon, and a son, 67-year-old Monty Poe of Jacksonville, as well as six grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren, according to her obituary.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Forest Hills United Methodist Church in Macon. Hart’s Mortuary and Crematory at the Cupola, is in charge of arrangements.
