Historic City News reporters were notified by Lt. Col. James Evans at Department of Military Affairs HQ in St Augustine, that today marks the first day that same-sex domestic partners of military members may enroll to receive spousal benefits.
With this step, soldiers who are in same-sex unions have the opportunity to enjoy all of the same benefits of married male-female couples; and moves the Florida National Guard into full compliance with federal statutes, state statutes, and governing policies.
“Enrollment into the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System can be accomplished at any Florida National Guard facility responsible for initial benefits enrollment,” Evans told local reporters.
No word from HQ on the number of same-sex couples who are expected to register today.
