The Monkees, that late-60’s stew of jangle pop and shenanigans, has a special place in the memories of many Historic City News readers. Friday night, you’ll have an opportunity to see the remaining three-of-four of the original cast members when they perform live at the St Augustine Amphitheatre.
The Monkees, who got the funniest looks from everyone they meet, weren’t really a band at all — they were a television show about a band; kind of like “Glee” is a show about a glee club. The show stopped airing on NBC in 1968, but the lark turned into something lasting. The Monkees lived on in albums, reruns and tours fueled by such hits as Pleasant Valley Sunday, Last Train to Clarksville, and Daydream Believer
Mickey Dolenz, Davy Jones, Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork were a fake band that turned into a real band that outsold the Beatles and the Rolling Stones during their heyday. Davy Jones died in Stuart in February 2012, a staggering blow to the band.
A Midsummer Night with the Monkeys stars Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork in a full multimedia evening of music, rare films and one-of-a-kind photographs culled from the group’s archives.
Doors at the Amphitheatre, located at 1340 A1A South in St Augustine, open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 8:00 p.m. on this Friday, July 26, 2013.
