The Veterans Council of St Johns County reported to Historic City News that, in cooperation with the St. Augustine 450th Military Commemoration Committee, they are sponsoring the annual Veterans Day Ceremony on November 11th at Francis Field; located on West Castillo Drive in St Augustine.
Gates to the Field will be opened after 8:00 a.m. and there is no admission charge to attend this event.
All Historic City News readers are welcome to attend; especially our military veterans from all of our country’s wars and conflicts. All veterans will be honored and Korean War Veterans will be specifically honored in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War.
The St Augustine High School Junior ROTC drill team will be performing prior to the opening ceremony.
At 9:59 a.m., we will begin a minute of random firing of weapons, including cannons, which will stop a 10:00 a.m. — commemorating the continuous barrage that ended the war to end all wars in 1918.
The ceremony will include re-enactors in uniforms of many periods, from 1565 to the present to emphasize the vital role of the military through the centuries. There will be displays from various organizations.
The names of St. Johns County veterans, who passed away since Memorial Day will be read followed by a salute officer who will ring a bell after the completion of each military service.
Our speaker will be Rear Admiral Rick Williamson, Commander of Naval Region Southeast at Naval Air Station Jacksonville.
