Light Up Night concludes with Compline by Candlelight

Posted on 11/12/201311/13/2013 By Historic City News

400-CATHEDRAL-BASILICAFr. Thomas S. Willis, Rector of the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Augustine, has invited all Historic City News readers to celebrate the sixth anniversary of Compline by Candlelight; as part of the “Nights of Lights” Light Up Night festivities.

Compline is more popularly known as Night Prayer and is the Church’s final liturgical service in a given day. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine will celebrate Compline by Candlelight on Saturday, November 23 at 8:30 p.m.

“To see the historic Cathedral lit by the softness of candlelight is something to behold,” Fr. Willis told Historic City News. “We are happy to be able to offer Compline as a nice way for people and the town to bring the evening to a fitting conclusion.”

The Schola Cantorae of the Cathedral, under the direction of Shannon McKay, will provide music for the liturgy. They will also assist in the chanting of the psalms that are the central part of Night Prayer. The 15-to-20 minute service is part of the traditional rites of many Christian religions including Catholic, Orthodox, Episcopalian and Lutheran.

“The first evening of Nights of Lights is just so special,” Fr. Willis said. “There is such an energy and excitement in downtown.”
