Architectural historian Laurie Ossman, author of the new book “Carrère & Hastings: The Masterworks,” will discuss the pair’s contributions to the nation’s oldest city when she speaks at Flagler College on March 19, according to an announcement received by Historic City News.
Architects Thomas Hastings and John Carrère worked under the belief that buildings should be placed into the context of their surroundings.
With that concept in mind, the pair would set out to alter the old town of St. Augustine to accommodate Henry Flagler’s new buildings and enterprises.
Ossman, who has a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, is an expert on the preservation and interpretation of historic structures. Her book is an illustrated volume describing the surviving buildings of Carrère and Hastings, including the historic Ponce de Leon Hotel.
Her lecture, “Carrère and Hastings and the Reinvention of St. Augustine,” is free and open to the public and will take place at 7:00 p.m. on March 19 in the Lewis Auditorium at Flagler College, 14 Granada Street in St Augustine.
This event is part of “Celebrating the Legacy: 125 Years of the Hotel Ponce de Leon”.
The yearlong celebration honors the legacy of Flagler’s entrepreneurship and community building; both as a founding partner with John D. Rockefeller in Standard Oil, and as the man who launched a resort empire along Florida’s east coast. Visit ponce125.com for more details or call 904-819-6400.
