Severe storm believed to be tornado cuts through Flagler County

At 7:06 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for northern Flagler County, at 7:18 p.m., an update announced that the warning was cancelled. But, Historic City News has learned that during the less than 15-minute window, a severe storm caused thousands and thousands of dollars in damage to residences and businesses in the area.

Downed power lines and roofs were ripped from the exposed framework of homes in Indian Trails. The Florida Power and Light customer service website is reporting more than 3,000 power outages in Flagler County as of 11:00 p.m.

“Around 6:00 p.m., we were about halfway through our Christmas parade in Town Center when we got the call from the fire department saying severe weather was on the way and to go ahead and cancel, so we did,” said Palm Coast Communications and Marketing Manager, Cindi Lane. “We made an announcement that people should leave the parade and go to safe locations.”

National Weather Service meteorologists will be in Palm Coast tomorrow to inspect damage and determine if a tornado did touch down.

Sheriff’s Office public information officer, Bob Weber, went to the staging area; however, we have no reports to indicate that there has been any looting or other criminal activity at or in the area of the approximately six or more homes that suffered the greatest damage.

Fire Rescue has not reported any injuries to persons on the ground as a result of the severe weather.
