Adam Shockey, President and CEO of Tour Saint Augustine Inc., told Historic City News yesterday that he is exceptionally proud to announce the launch of St Augustine Black Heritage Tours Inc. — the city’s first fully licensed seller of travel and receptive tour operator specializing in Black History and Civil Rights tours.
The new company is owned by Tour Saint Augustine Inc., and will bring together some of the area’s best talent while working with several other similar Northeast Florida organizations to create tour packages that focus specifically on Civil Rights and Black History.
“This company is something we believe St Augustine has needed for a while as it brings awareness to a very important cultural heritage aspect of the area,” Shockey told reporters. “With the upcoming 50th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, it just felt like the time was right and it’s a perfect fit with our other companies.”
Free weekly tours are sponsored by St Augustine City Walks, who has committed to privately funding the free tours at least through 2015, and is also owned by Tour Saint Augustine Inc. Free guided tours will also be offered to the public on Saturdays.
The free, 1-hour historic walking tours begin Saturday June 29th and depart from the Tour Saint Augustine Inc. office on Granada Street at 5:00 p.m. For more information and to register, visit www.StAugustineBlackHeritageTours.com
“These free tours are part of our commitment to sharing these stories with future generations and giving back to our community,” Shockey said. “I’m exceptionally proud of this effort.”
