For a duo who reveled in commercial success in the 1980’s while managing to escape critical acclaim, Daryl Hall and John Oates performed to sellout crowds in St Augustine and Clearwater this weekend; and Historic City News photojournalist Mark Cubbedge was front and center.
The 1980’s musicians, with their smooth, catchy take on Philly soul, logged their first hit in 1974. In the recording industry, they have accumulated six number one singles and six platinum albums.
“Such a wonderful show,” one fan, Gigi Gomez, said after the performance. “Loved that version of She’s Gone. It’s rare to see musicians who just keep evolving.”
Their songs last night were filled with strong hooks and melodies that adhered to soul traditions; incorporating elements of new wave and hard rock.
Once again, a tip of the hat Ryan Murphy and crew at St Augustine Amphitheatre for another first class entertainment event.
