Heart has never been a band that shied away from its musical influences of the 1970s and it performed a brilliant mix of cover tunes interspersed with its own mega-hits that kept a sold-out crowd on their feet most of the soggy evening last night at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre.
The 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members got their set off to a blistering start by performing one of their biggest hits, “Barracuda”, and followed it with a number of Billboard successes including “Magic Man”, “Crazy on You”, and a pair of their No. 1 hits from the 1980s “Alone” and “These Dreams.” Singer Ann Wilson performed flawlessly, proving she remains one of the reigning female voices in rock and roll.
The vocal crowd at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre, which was just nominated for the 2014 Pollstar Red Rocks Award for Best Small Music Venue, was also treated to versions of Paul McCartney’s “Let Me Roll It”, and Robin Trower’s “Day of the Eagle”.
One of the real gems of the night was the performance of a song called “Heaven”, which the band has played strictly for live audiences and not released on a studio album — yet anyway.
“Heaven” features Nancy Wilson channeling Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page as she played guitar using a violin bow.
Heart closed the show by performing three Zeppelin songs as encores — the “Immigrant Song”, “No Quarter”, and lastly “Misty Mountain Hop.”
Brynn Marie was the show opener, confidently performing her own style of rocking country music.
