Flagler College President Dr. William T. Abare, Jr., announced to Historic City News today that St Johns County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph G. Joyner, has been appointed to the Flagler College Board of Trustees.
Joyner has been Superintendent of Schools in St. Johns County since 2003, overseeing a district that is one of only 10 in the state to earn an “A” for the past nine years. High school graduates rank second in the state in readiness for college. Joyner initiated the first Pursuing Victory with Honor program in the state, which incorporates character education into athletic programs.
“I am thrilled that Dr. Joyner has agreed to serve as a member of our Board of Trustees,” Abare wrote in his announcement. “He is a highly respected member of our community, and is one of the most highly regarded school superintendents in the state of Florida. He is a dynamic leader and a skilled administrator who has devoted his life to education and is steadfast in his commitment to quality. We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Joyner join our board.”
Joyner currently serves on the Florida Department of Education’s K-12 Public School Facility Funding Task Force. In 2007-08, he served as President of the Florida Association of District School Superintendents, and continues to serve on their board. In 2009, he was selected as the Florida Superintendent of the Year by the organization.
“I am humbled and honored at being chosen to serve Flagler College in this capacity,” Joyner said.
Joyner is very involved in the community and received the 2009 Gus Craig Award from the Salvation Army in recognition of his community service. He serves on the boards of the American Cancer Society, PACT Prevention Coalition, the St. Johns County Education Foundation, St. Francis House and United Way. He is also an active member of the Rotary Club of Historic St. Augustine.
He attended Florida State University on a football scholarship and holds master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Central Florida.
