Historic City News was informed by event organizers that tomorrow, Saturday September 5, 2014, a group of citizens will protest the approval of a building permit to 7-Eleven that allows the construction of a convenience store with 12 gas pumps.
The protesters, many of whom live in the Nelmar Terrace neighborhood that borders the site, also includes residents from North City, as well as Vilano Beach, and South Ponte Vedra Beach, who depend on the narrow May Street as their access to the mainland from the barrier island.
Supporters are asked to join the protesters and picket. If it is not possible to attend the rally in person, you are asked to send your concerns to the following officials, asking for help in stopping this project:
- Greg Evans, FDOT District 2 Secretary
- evans@dot.state.fl.us

- Connie Walker, Maintenance Permit Manager

The pickets will begin at 4:00 p.m. and continue until 5:30 p.m. at the corner of May Street and San Marco Avenue in St Augustine, according to contacts Corinne White and Gina Burrell.
Grievances of the protesters include city officials who approved a building permit, even though the project was denied by the Historic Architectural Review Board, Planning & Building Department, and the City Commission.
They have also expressed disapproval of the Florida Department of Transportation for allowing a variance from their standard regulations for driveway access and turnaround.
The developers took their appeal to Circuit Court, but no action has been taken on that complaint.
