That Justice Quince would agree to officiate the ceremony is testament to the fact that this is a historic occasion on the eve of the city’s anniversary year. Shaver is only the second woman to hold the office of mayor, and is the only woman to be elected mayor directly by the citizens.
“I am honored and humbled that Justice Quince would accept my invitation to come to St Augustine and share this occasion with us,” Shaver told Historic City News editor Michael Gold this morning. “I’ll be holding our family bible from 1820 that belonged to my late father, Captain Robert Shaver, United States Navy. I am looking forward to serving all the people of the city that I love.”
“I’ve noticed since the election that our city staff is energized,” said incoming Commissioner Todd Neville. “I am looking forward to working with such a highly qualified team.”
Vice-mayor Sikes-Kline could not be reached by phone today, however, she has expressed her interest in continuing to build on the relationships she has established during her six years of service to the city.
If you plan to attend, the special meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, December 1 in the Alcazar Room on the first floor City Hall courtyard located at 75 King Street in St Augustine. You can watch the ceremonies live on the Comcast Government TV channel, or live over the Internet at CoSATV.com.
