Choice for Senate District 6
Even outside our editorial review board, this race has been controversial — at best. Historic City News readers have been mixed in their comments.
About a third support Travis Hutson; who we endorsed as a member of the Florida House of Representatives for District 24.
Another third seem supportive of Ronald Renuart; who we also endorsed as a member of the Florida House of Representatives for District 17.

This is the seat vacated by John Thrasher, and almost all of the comments have objected to the way it was surrendered immediately after it was won. There is also objection to both Hutson and Renuart from our readers; since each of them did the same thing as Thrasher — elected then resigned in order to run for Thrasher’s vacant seat.
We listened to the stump speeches and relied on our experiences with Thrasher, Hutson, and Renuart, and have decided to recommend Dennis McDonald for Senator in Florida District 6 during the Republican Special Election.
McDonald is not well known publicly, but then, he has not been elected to or served in public office. He is running a grass-roots campaign that has resonated with local voters who find him approachable, honest in his answers to questions, and not beholding to any special interests.
I realize that’s easy to say about a first time candidate, but that is very true in this election since both formerly re-elected representatives seeking a shot at the District 6 Senate Seat are well supported by political action committees, and large, powerful lobbies across the state, as reflected in their campaign financial reports.
We don’t feel that makes them “bad men”, but I believe the consensus around the table and, to a larger degree, in the community, is to recommend the man who came forward to run for the seat he intends to keep and has the fewest “strings attached”.
Renuart is a better candidate for Senator than Hutson, who is only 30-years-old and has only served one two-year term as a state representative. If this were any other situation, we would have likely endorsed Renuart.
But, the facts are the facts. We want voters to consider each candidate on their merits, their experience, their philosophies, and the likelihood that they will serve their full term, politically debt-free. We endorse Dennis McDonald for Florida Senator – District 6.
