Florida Department of Law Enforcement Public Information Officer Gretl Plessinger informed local Historic City News reporters that this week the agency is participating in a multistate workgroup sharing methods and best practices when investigating “officer-involved” shootings.
The workgroup, made up of members from the Association of State Criminal Investigative Agencies, is being hosted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigations.
“FDLE is a national leader investigating hundreds of officer involved shooting cases,” said FDLE Commissioner Rick Swearingen. “I’m proud of our commitment to provide independent and thorough investigations in these prominent cases.”
Other state agencies being participating in the workgroup are Alabama State Bureau of Investigation, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Kentucky State Police, Louisiana State Police, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The weeklong workgroup began on Monday.
FDLE investigates officer involved shootings at the request of the local agency to determine the facts of the shooting.
FDLE then turns its case over to a local state attorney who determines whether or not criminal charges will be filed.
Generally, the local agency also conducts an administrative investigation to ensure their officers followed agency policies and procedures.
