Local fireworks rules prohibit many homemade displays

St. Johns County Fire Rescue officials encourage all Historic City News readers to use extreme caution when discharging fireworks of any kind during the July 4th celebrations.  In the State of Florida as well as in St. Johns County, it is illegal to use any firework that either goes boom, or leaves the ground.

Officials encourage residents to attend public fireworks displays in lieu of private fireworks demonstrations.  These public displays are put on by licensed professional vendors, and are permitted on a case-by-case basis by local fire marshals who ensure that the fireworks are used in a controlled and safe environment.

Additionally, due to persistent dry conditions present throughout Northeast Florida, SJCFR is advising residents to adhere to the law and avoid using any firework emitting heat and/or flames.

Below are some helpful safety tips to follow if you plan on using legal recreational fireworks:

• Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks
• Read and follow all warnings and instructions
• Be sure other people are out of range before lighting fireworks.
• Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from the house, dry leaves, and flammable materials.
• Never try to relight fireworks that have not fully functioned.
• Keep a bucket of water nearby in case of a malfunction or fire.
