Historic City News was informed by the Florida Highway Patrol that a Lakeland, Georgia couple, 46-year-old Nathaniel F. Davis and his wife, 41-year-old Leslie S. Davis, lost their lives in a two-vehicle collision Friday night near the Northeast Florida Regional Airport at St Augustine.
The couple was headed north on US-1 near Gun Club Road at about 9:56 p.m., when a 1996 Toyota Camry overtook the 2006 Ford pickup truck that they were driving.
The driver of the Camry, 28-year-old Ashley D. Zurvalec, struck the rear of the F-150 pickup truck; causing it to leave the roadway, heading toward the right shoulder. The pickup traveled off the roadway, through a ditch, causing it to catapult over a section of fence surrounding the airport.
Both occupants of the pickup truck were ejected. They died at the scene. The investigation continues to determine if the seatbelts in the truck were being properly worn. The passenger’s shoulder belt was found wrapped around the back of her seat.
The Camry came to final rest in the ditch located along the right shoulder. Zurvalec was uninjured in the crash. Charges against her are pending the results of further investigation.
Zurvalec, whose last reported address was 374 N 1st Place in St Augustine, was arrested by St Augustine police less than one-year ago for driving under the influence. She refused to submit to a DUI test at that time; adding to her charges. She had previously had her drivers license suspended. Only 11-hours after her July 26, 2014 arrest, she was released after being allowed to post a $500 appearance bond on the two charges.
