All Historic City News readers are encouraged to attend and participate in an “Open House” discussion regarding the future of the critically important San Marco Avenue intersection project at May Street in North City.
The city will host the “Open House” on Tuesday, October 20 starting at 5:00 p.m. and lasting until 7:00 p.m. in The Alcazar Room, City Hall, 75 King Street, according to Paul Williamson.
One of the meeting’s resources will be video simulations illustrating each proposal’s effect on the intersection, what traffic looks like today, and what it will look like in 20 years if no action is taken. The animated videos of the improvements under consideration which greatly enhances the illustrations of each proposal.
The Florida Department of Transportation has been studying how to improve traffic flow thru the following intersections:
- Ponce De Leon Boulevard (US-1) at San Carlos Avenue
- San Carlos Avenue at San Marco Avenue (SR-A1A)
- San Marco Avenue (SR-A1A) at May Street (SR-A1A)
Based on traffic analysis and public comments, four alternatives were developed to improve mobility in the area. Alternative 2 was eliminated from further consideration due to poor traffic operation and Alternative 3 was eliminated from further consideration due to undesirable pedestrian conditions due to a skewed intersection. The No-Build, Alternative 1 and Alternative 4 are still being considered and evaluated.
There have been traffic studies, analysis, and lots of public comment considered during this project. The City of St. Augustine would like to share some of the proposed improvements and evaluate feedback from citizens affected by the anticipated modifications.
A representative from the FDOT will participate in the Open House and will be able to answer questions and provide greater detail on the alternatives still under consideration.
