A Florida Department of Transportation spokesperson has confirmed to Historic City News reporters that vehicular traffic on the Vilano Beach Bridge will continue uninterrupted while $1.4 million in repairs are completed over the next few months.
The majority of the repairs, and in some cases, replacements, can be done to the failing fender system beneath the bridge from barges located in and near the channel.
The project also includes replacement of damaged piles and electrical work on the navigational lights that help to guide boats through the channel.
Construction by Hal Jones Contractor of Jacksonville, is scheduled to begin Monday, June 8th. There are currently no plans to work on weekends or close traffic lanes during the week. The contractor has until this fall to complete the work.
Boaters should use caution while traveling through the area.
