Art Association names and exhibits award-winning artists

Historic City News has learned that David Olson is now a two-time winner of the “Jean Wagner Troemel Best in Show” prize for his mixed media sculpture, “Spine”. Olson is a fine art teacher at St Augustine High School.

The St. Augustine Art Association presented awards to ten artists in the canvas, clay, collage and cutting edge exhibition, on display through May 29, in the Main Gallery at 22 Marine Street.

“This show presents a wide range of experimentation and artistic voices that challenge the viewer to contemplate the world from the artists’ perspective,” said Flagler College Fine Art Professor Leslie Robison who judged more than 80 works of art. “I was inspired to see artists who are venturing beyond the conventional.”

The exhibit, created to push the boundaries of ideas and materials, was installed by a team of volunteers under the artistic direction of Bill and Marcia Pappas.

Gina Torkos won the First Place Award for “The View,” a collage seascape. Ken Neighbors was given Second Place for “336 Squares,” a pen and ink drawing. “Woven Tower #1” by Sandra Maler earned the Third Place award, and Mark Parrish won Fourth Place for “Self Portrait,” a large-scale figurative painting.

Five honorable mention certificates were given to Susan Astleford, Donna DeLorenzo, Toni DeWitt, Francesca Garsh and Virginia Pledger.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, noon to 4:00 p.m. and Sundays, 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free.
