Historic City News has more information confirming this morning’s arrest of 28-year-old Steven James Murray; the man in possession of the 2012 blue Toyota Corolla owned by 71-year-old Fr. Rene W. Robert of St Augustine.
The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the agency has arrested James Murray after deputies found him at 12:45 a.m. Thursday on Nautilus Street and Crabtree Street, off Snipes Pond Road.
The arrest was made pursuant to a St Johns County warrant obtained after authorities say Murray led law enforcement officers on a two-county, high-speed chase this Tuesday. The arrest warrant charges Murray with aggravated fleeing and attempting to elude police. Murray was able to avoid capture when he lost pursuing police units in heavy Jacksonville traffic.
According to a news release, information was received and reviewed by the US Marshal Service providing Murray’s possible location together with a warning that Murray was considered “armed and dangerous”.
The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Team, the SC State Law Enforcement Division and the US Marshal Service responded to a location where Murray was believed to be.
They located the vehicle on Overlook Court around 5:22 p.m. Wednesday. When police prepared to approach the vehicle, Murray drove away; later crashing the car in the woods. He escaped the vehicle and fled on foot, according to a report in the Aiken Standard.
Our next update will likely occur after St Johns County detectives, who traveled to Aiken to assist in the investigation, have the opportunity to interview Murray.
