Living history free day event at Fort Matanzas

Park Ranger Griselle Fuellner invites Historic City News readers to enjoy a special free day event, “Cultural Influences in the Spanish Colonial Kitchen”, on Saturday, January 30, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Fort Matanzas National Monument will host costumed reenactors who will describe the life of a typical woman in Saint Augustine during the Spanish period. Reenactors will also be demonstrating how foods from three different cultures combined and created some of the best dishes available in 1740’s colonial Spanish Florida. Produce from three very different cultures – Native American, African, and Spanish – will be on display, with conversations about how each of these influenced the Spanish kitchen.

In addition, the park will be operating its regular ferry service to the fort during this event. Enjoy a short free ferry ride to Fort Matanzas and spend about 40 minutes exploring the fort and its role as protector of St. Augustine’s southern approach.

Boarding passes are required for the ferry and are distributed on a first come, first served basis at the park’s visitor center. Space is limited for these ferry trips.
