The St. Augustine Beach Police Department informed local Historic City News reporters that during a welfare check at 10:40 a.m. today, officers found two small children without parental supervision, one of whom was walking in the parking lot of a local motel.

Police responded to America’s Best Value Inn, located at 3955 A1A South, after a witness observed the child and took them to the office. The desk clerk called police.

On investigation, officers discovered the second child and a homeless couple staying in one of the motel rooms, found to contain suspected precursor methamphetamine lab materials.

When the Sheriff’s Office clandestine lab team arrived, and tested the materials, the paraphernalia tested positive for methamphetamine.

The two small children present, a toddler and an infant, were turned over to authorities with the Florida Department of Children and Families.

The adults, identified as 39-year-old Brian K. Gibson and 28-year-old Jessica L. Gibson were charged with production and possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, maintaining a drug dwelling, and child neglect.

The Gibsons remain in custody this evening in lieu of $18,000 bond each.
