February Mentor Spotlight: Monette Scott

The St. Johns County Education Foundation notified Historic City News that February’s “Take Stock in Children” mentor spotlight shines on Monette Scott.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, the self described “City Girl” has lived in the Mandarin and Ponte Vedra area for the past 30 years. She relocated to Jacksonville, Florida as a newlywed in 1980. Over the past thirty years, Monette has used her degree in Special Education in various capacities in the Jacksonville area. She spent the majority of her career in the field of social work employed by the Children’s Home Society. She also taught at San Jose Episcopal Day School, JCA Preschool, and gifted fourth grade students in Duval County Schools.

Monette joined the Take Stock in Children Program late last fall. Monette explained, “My boys are adults now and out on their own. I find that I have time to dedicate to worthwhile projects. I had read an article in the Ponte Vedra Recorder about Take Stock in Children and cut it out because I thought that might be just what I was looking for. Once I contacted Donna Lueders at [the Education Foundation’s] office and got connected with the Program Coordinator, I knew this was definitely something I could do. I can do this.”

Monette’s desire to invest in the life of another was the driving force that helped her persevere until she found the right volunteer experience for her. She is now matched with a mentee and experiencing the excitement of discovery and connection with a promising student in our program.
