Historic City News received word from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday that two adults and two juveniles were arrested in connection with two separate car burglaries that occurred on Prosperity Lake Drive off of CR-210 West.
Shortly before 2:00 a.m., Deputy Craig Maguire was on patrol in the Southlake Subdivision when he observed a young man wearing dark clothing walking towards an open garage on Prosperity Lake Drive. Maguire also observed an early model Toyota parked in front of an unoccupied home; near the center of the road.
Deputies located a 17 year-old girl; crouched inside her vehicle. She was secured and questioned, according to the incident report.
Kelshaw informed Historic City News that the girl told deputies that three young men had unloaded equipment into her car; then left on foot. According to the girl, she did not know what they were doing, but, she was there to pick them up.
A short time later, a witness was contacted that observed three young men asking for a ride at a nearby convenience store. When deputies responded to the convenience store, they located a 16 year-old male juvenile inside and two adult males who were seen running from the rear of the store.
All four persons were arrested and charged with two counts of burglary to a conveyance, grand theft, and resisting arrest without violence.
The four were identified as 20 year-old Mitchell Stewart Cody whose address is 8232 Hall Lane in St. Augustine, 21 year-old Joel Maldonado Cruz whose address is 206 Vassar Road, 17 year-old Courtnie Michelle Birkett whose address is 3335 CR-208 and 16 year-old Robert Christopher Clark whose address is 2034 Forbes Road.
Cruz and Birkett were also charged with violation of probation.
Cody remains in custody at the St. Johns County Detention Facility in lieu of $8,000 bond, and Cruz is being held without bond.
Each of the two juveniles was released to a parent following the booking procedure.
Additional charges are pending as detectives continue their investigation.
