St. Johns County Audubon member Ali Peyre notified Historic City News that the 2011 nesting season for shorebirds and seabirds along the St. Johns County coastline has begun.
Least Terns are incubating eggs and Wilson’s Plover chicks have been spotted.
Volunteer bird stewards are critical in helping beach-nesting birds raise their families successfully.
Bird steward opportunities exist at several locations in St. Johns County. Volunteers are provided with training in bird identification, nesting cycles, and stewardship.
You will have the opportunity to observe the birds as they incubate their eggs and raise their chicks to maturity on our beautiful beaches.
Your 3-hour stewarding shift on the beach will surely be a rewarding experience as you watch these baby birds grow up safely, thanks to you.
Join us for a hands-on training session at the Summer Haven least tern colony at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 25, 2011.
