Gazebo repairs won’t interfere with Historic City News reader’s enjoyment of the 21st annual tradition of St. Augustine’s popular “Concerts in the Plaza” — just one of many local events that will kick-off this Memorial Day weekend.
We reported on April 7, 2011, that decay of the supporting columns on the iconic landmark, located in the center of the Plaza de la Constitucion, forced city officials to close the structure that has been showing its age for some time.
A temporary stage, adjacent to the gazebo, will allow St. Augustine Jazz Society artists to perform a fresh and exciting opening concert between 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
Concerts featuring a variety of talent will continue every Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. throughout the summer. Get comfortable for the free concerts by bringing a lawn chair or blanket.
City Public Affairs spokesman Cathy DuPont told Historic City News that new supports are being manufactured. Original estimates were that approximately six weeks would be required while permanent repairs are being made.
