Pop, Punk and New Wave in the Art World

Flagler College reported to Historic City News that Catherine McFarland, instructor of art history at Flagler College, will present “Pop, Punk and New Wave in the Art World” on October 20th as part of their Community Lecture Series this fall.

McFarland graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Smith College in 1974. She received her Master of Arts degree from Emory University and has completed three years of doctoral work. She specializes in the iconography of mythology in European Art.

In the ‘70s and ‘80s, she was a working artist.

McFarland has taught a wide range of art history courses at Oglethorpe University and the Atlanta College of Art for the last 25 years. At Oglethorpe, she also developed and taught courses in the general education program.

Among McFarland’s conference papers and lectures are, “Vermeer to the Fourth Power: Girl with a Pearl Earring,” which she presented in 2007 at an international conference, “Literature on Screen,” and “Art and Literature in Archaic Greece.”

She received the Core Teaching Award from Oglethorpe University in 2004 and has served on the Board of Directors of the Schultz Foundation, the Nexus Art Center and Image Film and Video.

McFarland is a new instructor at Flagler College teaching Art History I, II and two sections of Visual Culture.

The Fall 2009 Community Lecture Series is featuring speakers who have unique perspectives on rock ‘n’ roll in America. Upcoming speakers for fall include:

Nov. 17 – Dr. Michael Butler, Flagler College assistant professor of history with “Singing Songs About the Southland: Music and the White Male Identity in the Post-Civil Rights South”
Dec. 15 – Terry Nails, former bassist for Ozzy Osbourne and Tommy Tutone, with “Hard Rock and Heavy Metal: Ozzy and Other Delightful Madmen”

Tickets are $5 per person for a single lecture. All lectures begin at 10 a.m. in the Flagler Room at Flagler College, 74 King Street. Reservations are required, but space is limited. Lectures will last approximately one hour and will be followed by a coffee and Danish reception.
