Candlelight vigil for domestic violence victims
Kim Brumfield, Community Awareness Coordinator for the Betty Griffin House in St. Johns County, reported to Historic City News that a candlelight vigil and silent witness exhibit would be held tomorrow in honor of victims and survivors of domestic violence in our community.
Thursday October 6, red, life-sized silent witness silhouettes and red flag posters will line the sidewalk at the Plaza de la Constitution in St. Augustine; each representing a person who once lived, worked, had neighbors, friends and family before their death.
Local violinist Janine Newfield will be performing during the Domestic Violence Awareness Month ceremony, which begins at 6:30 p.m.
A moment of silence will be called to remember and honor the women, men and children who are victims of domestic homicide in St. Johns County. “It will be very emotional for many, and an amazing awareness event for Betty Griffin House,” Brumfield said.
Last year’s event was held at the St. Johns County Library and well attended by a crowd; most of whom were holding purple-shrouded candlesticks. Purple is the color for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
