The Ocala Star-Banner reported that officials with the U.S. Postal Service have proposed a cost-cutting plan that would eliminate hundreds of positions at the Gainesville mail processing facility, which currently handles mail for Marion, Alachua and several surrounding counties.
The nearly $5.8 million in savings realized in the consolidation would require mail-processing services for most Marion County ZIP codes will be relocated to Tampa and processing for the remainder will be relocated to Jacksonville.
If approved, more than 230 Gainesville postal workers, including 159 clerks and mail handlers, could be forced to retire or be relocated to either Tampa or Jacksonville.
Written public comments will be accepted through December 16th addressed to the North Florida District, P.O. Box 40005, Jacksonville, FL 32203-0005. A decision may be announced as soon as February.
