Originally not expected to be finished before April 2012, the Florida Department of Transportation reported to Historic City News that this week a new seawall running along SR-A1A north of the Flagler County line to Summer Haven has been completed — months ahead of schedule.
“The combination of a dedicated contractor and cooperative weather aided in completing construction more than four months, or approximately 30 percent, ahead of schedule,” said FDOT representative Laurie Sanderson.
Construction of the new seawall will help prevent erosion and maintain the integrity of scenic A1A in the Summer Haven area.
The seawall project was under a separate contract from the two Summer Haven bridges currently being replaced.
While the sea wall was constructed between the two bridges, contractors on both projects coordinated efforts to ensure public safety and minimize disruption during necessary lane closures and adjacent construction activities.
Hal Jones Contractor, Inc. finished work on the $2.6 million project in approximately nine months, including constructing the seawall, widening the paved shoulders along SR-A1A and resurfacing the roadway.
Completion of the Summer Haven bridge replacement project is scheduled for Spring 2012.
