Artist Mitch Lyons exhibits clay monoprints

St. Johns River Community College reported to Historic City News that, as part of the visiting artist series, Florida School of the Arts will present a gallery exhibition for Pennsylvania artist Mitch Lyons.

The artist will speak about his collection, “Inner View: clay monoprints,” at an opening reception on Thursday, January 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the FloArts main gallery located on St. Johns River Community College’s Palatka campus.

FloArts gallery director and fine arts instructor Michael Burban credits Lyons as being the founder of the clay monoprint process, an innovative technique of applying colored clays and slips, rather than ink, onto a slab of unfired stoneware clay. The image is then transferred, by hand, onto canvas; creating an original monotype print.

The exhibit will be on display through February 12. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Gallery exhibits are free and open to the public.

Florida School of the Arts is Florida’s first state-supported professional arts school. Approximately 150 students attend Florida School of the Arts each year, with students recruited from across the state, the southeast region and New York City. Admission is based on audition and portfolio review.
