The St. Augustine news desk at Historic City News has received confirmation that Jane Landers will highlight the annual St. Augustine Historical Society meeting.
At the January 12th meeting, Landers will present her study of General Jorge Biassou; the black Haitian chieftain who was Spain’s highest ranking officer here in the late 18th century.
Landers, who is an associate professor of History and past director of the Center for Latin American Studies at Vanderbilt University, has authored numerous works including Black Society in Spanish Florida and The African American Heritage of Florida.
Biassou rose to the rank of general, commanded Fort Matanzas 1796-1801, and is buried in an unmarked grave in Tolomato Cemetery.
The Society will welcome back two members to the Board of Trustees; Greg Moore and Paul Thompson. Two new trustees will be installed; Suzanne Booth and Tracy Upchurch.
