March for Life will necessitate road closures

Cathy DuPont reported to the St. Augustine local news desk of Historic City News that the March for Life planned for 11:00 a.m. on this Saturday, January 16th, will necessitate the City making a brief closure of a portion of San Marco Avenue and South Castillo Drive.

The march will start at the Mission Nombre de Dios and proceed south on San Marco Avenue, continuing on South Castillo Drive to the City Gates, then, south on St. George Street to the Plaza — where the event concludes.

San Marco Avenue will be closed to all vehicular traffic during the procession which should take approximately 45 minutes. In addition, St. George Street – between Cathedral Place and King Street – will be closed from approximately 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

The public is advised to avoid the area unless you are involved with the event.

In 1974, the March for Life was incorporated as a non-profit, non-partisan, non-sectarian organization, nationally. March for Life is an annual pro-life rally protesting abortion. The theme for the 2010 event, which last year drew over 1,500 participants locally, is Stand Up Now! Unite for the Life Principles–No Exception! No Compromise! The keynote speaker will be Bobby Schindler.

Before the march, there will be a Friday Youth Night BBQ beginning at 6:00 p.m. with prayer at the Great Cross, then BBQ cookout at 10 Sebastian Avenue. Organizers are asking for everyone to bring their own flashlight as they are going to do something special.

Early Saturday morning before the march, between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., you can help hammer close to 4,000 white crosses into the Mission grounds to represent the number of unborn lost to abortion everyday in the U.S. The Cemetery for the Innocents is sponsored by St. Gerard Campus.

After the March, there will be a spaghetti dinner at the Bishop Baker Center located at 259 St. George Street with all proceeds benefiting St. Gerard Campus.
