An asphalt plant has made life in one St. Johns County neighborhood nasty, brutish and stinky

Dominic Nicklo has lived in the St. Augustine Heights area since 1960. But he didn’t know an asphalt plant had moved in until he began to smell the tarry, chemical-laden fumes shortly after the plant opened in 2000.

Residents complain of headaches, nausea, burning eyes and omnipresent black dust.

County officials now agree allowing the asphalt operation to locate next to a residential neighborhood, an elementary school, a Little League softball field, a nursing home and an apartment complex for disabled adults was a “mistake.”

But efforts to get the APAC plant to move have been unsuccessful. Check out page 17 in this week’s issue to read more.
