Historic City News was saddened to learn of yesterday’s death of 92 year-old Walter H. Slater; a respected high school football coach, community leader, educator and resident of St Augustine since 1950.
Slater was born in Providence RI, and moved to town after serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the 8th Air Force during World War II.
Slater led a very active life; retiring from the St Johns County School District, where he was a teacher and coach. He was an inductee to the St Augustine Sports Hall of Fame and a member of the St Augustine Quarterback Club.
He later retired from the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind where he served as the assistant business manager.
Memorial services with military honors will be held 1:00 p.m. on Friday at Christ the King Anglican Church located at 6900 US-1 South near DuPont Center and south of SR-206. The Reverend David Allert is officiating and a reception will follow.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dene-e, and daughter Carol Lee Driskell. Slater is survived by his daughter, Jill Rousseau (Bob), St. Augustine; son, Michael Slater, La Magnolia, Costa Rica; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
