Speaker to be Africa Volunteer Corps founder

Studying African history wasn’t enough for Northwestern University student Caitlin Kelley; that, according to an announcement received by Historic City News today.

Kelley told reporters that she wanted to make some history of her own; so, in 2009, her path took her to Tanzania where she learned Swahili and founded Africa Volunteer Corps

“I will share my personal story about the beginning of the Africa Volunteer Corps, the work we do, as well as our vision for the future,” Kelley told Historic City News reporters. “I will also discuss the challenges I have faced in Tanzania and how I overcame them.”

This free lecture, “Becoming the change you want to see,” will take place at 7:00 p.m. on November 8th in the Gamache-Koger Theater of the Ringhaver Student Center of Flagler College; located at 50 Sevilla Street in St Augustine.

During her time in Africa, Kelley worked at a grassroots non-governmental organization, where she says she met many passionate local people; hungry to find ways to make a positive impact in their country.

Africa Volunteer Corps aims to foster “homegrown leaders” for African development and strengthen “ground-up” social change in Africa.

“The impact we have already seen is encouraging,” Kelley said. “I’ll also discuss what it means to be the change you want to see in the world and the lessons I have learned along this journey.”
