QuinTango is coming to St Augustine

After performing for 9 years at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, QuinTango is coming to St. Augustine.

This four-time WAMMIE award-winner is the only tango music group to give a Command Performance at The White House. QuinTango’s fusion tango chamber music has delighted audiences from the Kennedy Center to Buenos Aires. This season QuinTango’s performances include tours of Italy, Uruguay and Argentina in 2013. And now, St. Augustine.

Five classically trained musicians — two violins, cello, bass, and piano — present a unique take on the most passionate export of Argentina: the tango. QuinTango’s music is acoustic, which is to say unamplified, that fills the theatre space with golden sound and propulsive rhythm.

QuinTango showcases dancers Victoria Sarquisse and Federico Jorquera originally from Argentina (now based in Tampa) keeping step with the quintet’s tempestuous interpretations.

This is real tango, the steamy, femme-fatale, doom, heartbreak, and knife-blade kind, the offspring spawned in the back streets of Buenos Aires that eventually dominated the elegant concert halls of the world. Tango is the most haunting, irresistible music on earth. A good tango (and the ones QuinTango plays are great tangos) goes straight to the heart, the way a despairing Puccini aria does. But a tango not only hits you in your heart, it hits you in the solar plexus and your feet.

QuinTango performs with exceptional mastery, admirable precision and striking poise, through a luxurious, descriptive, very dramatic and demanding repertoire that salutes the legendary tango singers and composers.

With great respect for the essence of the tango, the quintessential quintet shows a thorough understanding of the rhythmic structure of this type of music. Their well-modulated instrumental balance, so crucial to the tango, allows us to observe the technical capability of each member of the group and so to appreciate each musician’s successful handling of tango’s constant emotional tensions.

The concert is Sunday May 12 at 2:00 pm in the Lewis Auditorium of Flagler College.
