The American Automobile Association named St Augustine as one of the 10 most walkable cities in North America, and it’s no wonder for a small downtown, whose streets were laid out in the 1590’s, we are a tightly compact small community of 13,000 whose town center is a mixture of residential, attractions, museums, restaurants and retail shops as well as historical monuments, churches and a college.
While some of St Augustine downtown streets are already pedestrian only, during the Gentlemen of the Road Stopover, these areas will be increased to include a 12-block area that will be designated “pedestrian only” from 8:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, September 13 and 14 until 3:00 a.m. the following morning.
“If you are staying in the downtown area, you will not need your car from the time you arrive until you depart,” according to Project Manager Mark Litzinger. “Most downtown accommodations are just a few minutes’ walk to the concert site in the heart of downtown; and, should you wish to leave the downtown area to explore the beaches or visit any attractions or restaurants outside the downtown, then take the shuttle.”
The cost of the shuttle system is being borne by the city, with the help of a grant from the St Johns County Tourist Development Council. The current “best estimates” are that the city’s costs, not covered by various fees and donations, will come to approximately $55,000, according to Litzinger who is the City Comptroller.
Downtown St Augustine is going to be filled with Gentlemen of the Road Stopover goers, Litzinger says, so parking downtown is NOT the way to go on the weekend of September 13th and 14th. Plus, he added, extensive road closures are planned — so, the “usual” parking spots will likely be unavailable.
Shuttle Dates and Times:
The shuttle will operate from 10:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, September 13 and 14, until 3:00 a.m. the following morning, with continuous drop off and pick up at designated locations throughout the operating hours. This will offer a safe return option for shuttle riders and the opportunity to enjoy all the area has to offer after the event ends at 11:00 p.m.
If you purchase a two-day shuttle wristband, you can park for free at the Northeast Florida Regional Airport park-and-ride lot — even if you do not plan to attend the concert. By using the park-and-ride lot, you will be able to travel on the shuttle system to Francis Field, the Beaches, and other locations in and around the city, with ease and without the hassle of fighting traffic or finding a parking space.
Lodging on Shuttle Routes:
If you do not see your accommodation listed, please call your accommodation to find out the best shuttle route to take. Those staying downtown or on Anastasia Boulevard should walk or bike to Francis Field. Please note, not all of the hotels listed will be serviced directly by the shuttle system but are within walking distance to official shuttle stops.
